Who Should Be Trained?

When you become an employee at the national head-quarters of one of the big disaster restoration franchise companies, one of the first things you’re required to do is attend the same training program that all the new franchisees do. This is a grueling two week course with only one day off. No matter what you have been hired for, you take the course, even if you have a desk job where the dirtiest you ever get is when you change the toner cartridge on the copier.

Help Make Your Staff More Knowledgeable

This is a terrific thing to do because it makes everyone more appreciative and understanding of just what the franchises have to do to make a living. It’s also a good reminder that they wouldn’t have their cushy jobs at corporate if it wasn’t for those hard working people.

As a contractor, you’ve got techs, production managers and others who work in the field and office and sales employees who don’t. Although your outside crew is in the thick of things, does your inside staff have any clue as to what your customers are going through? Do they understand the work it takes to get their lives back in order? Could they demonstrate at least a rudimentary explanation of the services you provide to a customer?

Improve Relations Thru Restoration Training

Putting your office staff through WRT, ASD and other classes would make them more knowledgeable, but you may not have the means to do so. But for them to gain increased insight, better understand the business and have greater empathy for your customers, a week or two riding along and observing jobs first hand may do it. There are also on-line training courses they could take that wouldn’t require much downtime.

However you chose to do it, providing at least some restoration training for your office staff can improve relations between them and your techs through better understanding of the work involved. It can also help them speak with greater authority and compassion to your customers. And who knows, if they learn enough, you might even be able to use them as temporary field help when things get crazy.
