Listen to Your Customers

“There is a difference between listening and waiting for your turn to speak”. – Simon Sinek

When we’re well versed on a particular subject, or a working professional, we tend to get excited about that topic and want to share our knowledge. After all, the reason we know the subject so well is because we’ve taken the time to learn about it and experience it. That usually means we enjoy our field of expertise and anything we enjoy and are good at we like to share with others.

The Key is to Just Listen

The problem with doing this is if we’re not careful and keep it dialed back, we can end up sounding like an arrogant know-it-all, which can quickly turn off some customers. It’s not that they don’t want a professional taking care of their problem, but they also want a contractor who will do something to fix their immediate concern and that’s vitally important – just LISTEN.

Allow the Customer to Describe the Problem

Part of what it means to listen is asking questions. Even if you have a pretty good idea what the answer to a question is, you should never assume anything. Let your customer articulate their concerns. By asking questions, you’re showing empathy and concern. This is especially important if your questions uncover any special needs or circumstances that you may have to solve or find a way to work around.

Restore Everything Back to Order Again

When answering questions, or describing to the home-owner the process of returning their property to normal, keep it simple. You’ve got a head full of methods and formulas and scientific know-how, but your customer doesn’t necessarily want or need to know all that. Keep your descriptions brief and leave the customer with the feeling that once you’re finished, they’ll have their property and life back in order again.

Keep Your Customer For Life

The purpose of business is to create a customer, not just for now but for life. The tons of certifications after your name won’t mean anything if your customers feel that they’re being ignored. Not only will they not call you again, they’ll also not recommend you to anyone. But by truly listening when a customer is talking, we not only create a stronger rapport but we might even learn something new.
